Auctioneers often ask each other, “What’s the best day for an auction?” In other words, is Saturday better than Wednesday or is Friday better than Tuesday? We’ll address here, “Is there a best day?”
It’s worth noting that we wrote some time ago about having an auction on Sunday. We explored why Sunday was a perfectly good day for an auction in most cases.
However, what about all those other days?
It is interesting that when a recent discussion took place amongst auctioneers, almost every day was mentioned as the, “best day.” Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday were all characterized by different auctioneers as the best day.
Such a discussion might lead to a conclusion that there isn’t a best day — which is essentially our finding as well. We conclude that any day if fine for an auction. Here’s our argument:
“If you’ve got it, they will come.” Our variation on the Field of Dreams movie’s line, “”If you build it, he will come.”
Our theory is that if an auctioneer has desirable property for sale, bidders will participate independent of the day of the week. Further, if an auctioneer has property which isn’t desirable, it may be better for that auctioneer to find something else to do, rather than search for the best day to sell undesirable property at auction.
And, what about holidays? Do auctioneers have auctions on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Independence Day, Easter, Mother’s Day and the like? In fact, they do. It appears from looking around AuctionZip and other sources for auction advertising, there is really no day in the calendar year that there isn’t an auction.
Lastly, could one day be a better day than another? We would suggest the answer to this question could be, “Yes.”
Let’s just suppose an auctioneer was desiring to schedule a weekday auction in Dexter, Tennessee and saw that nine (9) auctions were already scheduled for the upcoming Monday, six (6) on Tuesday, seven (7) on Wednesday, three (3) on Thursday and ten (10) on Friday. Might Thursday be a better day, given the total number of potential auction-goers would be split between only four (4) auctions, rather than more?
What’s the best day for an auction? Any day an auctioneer/seller(s) have desirable property for auction.
