At the 2019 National Auctioneers Association (NAA) International Auctioneer Championship (IAC) held Friday, July 12 in New Orleans, Louisiana, three questions were asked of the contestants. Here, we note those three questions and our answers to them:
Recently NAA launched a volunteer program to register for committees and leadership in order to enhance the member experience. What leadership skills do you possess that would benefit the NAA?
What have you learned about yourself by competing in the IAC competition?
Imagine you were the 2019 IAC champion. Being the champion comes with a great deal of responsibility. What topics have you prepared to present as the new champion as part of the speaker’s bureau if you were to become champion starting tomorrow?

I’ve been an auctioneer for over 30 years, and have experienced successes as well as less than optimum results — much like every other auctioneer. As such, this knowledge can be passed on to other auctioneers through committee and leadership roles to help other auctioneers have more success than not. Further, it’s important that every auctioneer take his or her experience to help further this industry we all love. The better the industry as a whole, the more sellers, bidders, and buyers will engage in our services.
What have you learned about yourself by competing in the IAC competition?
Every auctioneer who has competed has learned to be a better performer, speaker, and auctioneer. Competing sharpens all our skills, and as such, we are in better positions to serve our sellers and the general public. The more I compete, the more I realize I need to continue to compete, learn all I can, and better serve sellers, the public, and my own staff, who count on me to help them grow and prosper.

The auctioneers who win the International Auctioneer Championship are the best people to represent the National Auctioneers Association at state association meetings and otherwise around the United States. Young people considering the auction profession look up to champions and are especially receptive to hearing about their journey and how they won this prize. Topics I could talk about include overcoming fear of public speaking, competing, working as a contract auctioneer as well as many other topics.
