The NAA IAC Final Round Questions ’16

At the 2016 National Auctioneers Association (NAA) International Auctioneer Championship (IAC) recently held Friday, July 22 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, three questions were asked of the contestants. Here, we note those three questions and our answers to them:

  1. In recent months, the Promotions Committee released a powerful social media campaign. In your opinion, why do #AuctionsWork?

  2. Opening session speaker, Jim Abbott, spoke to how he uses the acronym ADAPT to create his success and find his own way of doing things. How do you adapt?

  3. In the spirit of an election year, what is “Presidential” and how can it apply to the National Auctioneers Association?

In recent months, the Promotions Committee released a powerful social media campaign. In your opinion, why do #AuctionsWork?

#AuctionsWork works just like Nike says “Just do it” and California Milk Processors asked “Got Milk?” Social media hashtags and the like energize like-minded people, get others to pay attention and “move the needle” in terms of conversation in and outside of social media. The fact we’re talking about it here is emblematic of how powerful the #AuctionsWork campaign continues to be.

Opening session speaker, Jim Abbott, spoke to how he uses the acronym ADAPT to create his success and find his own way of doing things. How do you adapt?

In the past 25 years, auctioneering has experienced the largest transformation in its history. Technology allows bidders to bid from all corners of the globe, “instant” appraisal information is available on the web, sellers find auctioneers to serve their needs and any buyer can find any auction — any item, any property — in seconds. How have we adapted? Like virtually every other auctioneer here today, we’ve incorporated automated clerking and cashiering, online bidding, worldwide marketing, and selling real and personal property in a tenth of the time — and for far more money — than we did 25 years ago.

In the spirit of an election year, what is “Presidential” and how can it apply to the National Auctioneers Association?

Successful auctions require leadership; auction companies require management; auctioneer associations require direction. Being “Presidential” is all of those things and more — being a leader, being a manager, and providing direction. Further, presidents inspire others to do the same and we’ve been blessed to have quality “Presidential” insight here at the National Auctioneers Association and the auction industry is certainly flush with “Presidential” performances.
