Ohio’s oldest active auctioneer 90 years old

Wonderful story about John Clum, age 90, appearing in numerous Ohio newspapers back in early 2009.

These stories noted some of John’s observations about the auction industry as well as life in general. According to Lori Landry of the Ohio Auctioneers Association, she is unaware of any older active auctioneer in Ohio, although the state licensing department does not track ages of their licensees.

John worked many jobs before getting his auctioneer’s license in 1978. He helps his son Mike Clum at the Mike Clum, Inc. auction barn located about 40 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio.

John’s wife, Jane Clum is 87 years old, and clerks auctions. They have been married 65 years. Jane remarked that she thinks he does a great job — and John’s response was “I’ve had a lot of practice.”

John Clum said he wants to work 20 more years.
