There are a wide variety of sound systems available to auctioneers. Most current models are wireless, or provide for optional wireless operation. We have advocated auctioneers always using a microphone when bid-calling.
From our survey of the marketplace at this time, it appears most auctioneers utilize one of three companies for their sound system needs:
Anchor Audio, Inc. in Torrance, California
Lectrosonics, Inc. in Rio Rancho, New Mexico
AmpliVox Sound Systems in Northbrook, Illinois
From each of these company websites, we took what appeared to be the “high end” or premium model of their offerings, and compared their material features below:CompanyAnchor AudioLectrosonicsAmpliVoxModelLiberty Platinum LIB-7500MU1Long Ranger 4Digital Audio Travel Partner

It is fair to say that both the Anchor Audio and AmpliVox systems, generally, also have features such as CD players, MP3 connections, USB Ports, Remote Controls, etc. The Lectrosonics system does not have such features built-in, but does have a 1/4″ jack, Mini-jack and RCA jack for optional inputs, as do the other systems noted here.
The other major difference between these systems is that the Anchor Audio and AmpliVox systems utilize direct radiating electro-dynamic drivers mounted in an enclosure, similar to home stereo speakers, car stereo speakers, and the like. Lectrosonics utilizes a horn type loudspeaker system.
When comparing these systems, the Anchor Audio and AmpliVox systems are somewhat similar, in contrast to the Lectrosonics system. Here are the more material differences in these systems:Lectrosonics Long Ranger 4
Narrower frequency response
Lighter in weight
Quicker battery charging time
Fixed, VHF frequency
Longer wireless range
Less expensive Anchor Audio Liberty Platinum LIB-7500MU1 and AmpliVox Digital Audio Travel Partner systems
Wider frequency response
Heavier in weight
Slower battery charging time
Variable, UHF frequency
Shorter wireless range
More expensive
Lastly, all three of these companies appear to be on solid financial ground. This is important as once a system is purchased, it is meaningful to have both support for questions and factory repair/upgrade services available.
Quality auctioneer sound systems are not inexpensive. For auctioneers selecting their first system, or upgrading an existing system, this guide is intended to help with that decision.
