Auctioneers should join

The National Auctioneers Association (NAA) (and the numerous state auctioneer associations around the United States) serves an important role.

These organizations advocate for the auction industry overall — for their members.

They also advocate for the auction industry overall for nonmembers alike — something nonmembers are often surprised to learn.

They champion legislative efforts, campaign for positive changes and support continued education in the field of auctioneering.

As the NAA and these other organizations endeavor to help all auctioneers, it is my opinion all auctioneers should seek to support those organizations.

Just as Theodore Roosevelt said:

Every man owes a part of his time and money to the business or industry in which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere.

In other words, I think auctioneers should join these organizations and participate in those efforts to improve the auction industry.

We wrote about this before where we suggested: “Ask not what your association can do for you, but what you can do for your association.” here: https://mikebrandlyauctioneer.wordpress.com/2013/11/22/auctioneers-ask-not-what-your-association-can-do-for-you/

I have as well noted that associations have sometimes had struggles making positive changes in opposition to state/federal agencies: https://mikebrandlyauctioneer.wordpress.com/2016/05/02/licensed-auctioneers-and-their-small-voices/ Despite these challenges, these associations continue to try.

Joining is not that hard. Contact the NAA and/or your state auctioneer association and ask about the process. Support these organizations which are supporting you, and take advantage of all the other benefits of being a member.
