(1 of the) 20 strangest college degrees is auctioneering?

What exactly makes a choice in college education strange? I would guess “strange” comes from unusual, and/or not common?

We estimate that less than 1,000 people graduate from auction school (auction “college”) in an average year. There are schools all over the United States, and class sizes range from only a few to just over 100.

A survey last year noted that auctioneering was one of the 20 strangest college degrees.

Others making the list included:

  1. Puppetry, University of Connecticut

  2. Professional nanny, Sullivan University in Kentucky

  3. Pop culture, Bowling Green State University

  4. Gunsmithing: Lassen Community College

  5. Fermentation Sciences, Appalachian State University

  6. Canadian studies, Duke University

  7. Decision-making, Indiana University

  8. The Beatles, Liverpool Hope University

  9. Sex, San Franciso State University

  10. Auctioneering, Harrisburg Area Community College

  11. Cannabis cultivation, Oaksterdam University

  12. Floral management, Mississippi State University

  13. Turfgrass science, Penn State University

  14. Egyptology, Brown University

  15. Bowling industry management and technology, Vincennes University

  16. Ecogastronomy, University of New Hampshire

  17. Packaging, Michigan State University

  18. Theme park engineering, California State University Long Beach

  19. Comic art, Minneapolis College of Art and Design

  20. Entertainment engineering and design, University of Nevada Las Vegas

We’ve written about the auction industry extensively. Those writings involving auction school include:

All in all, being an auctioneer (or going to school to become one) isn’t really that strange. Over thousands of auctions take place every day in the United States — most conducted by auctioneers — with certainly more auctions than, say, puppetry events.
